David Buersmeyer presented the pertinent core principles of Catholic Social Teaching and how they shed light on the discussions going on presently with regard to this crucial issue. Books The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for our Times, Jeffry Sachs, The Penguin Press, NY, 2005, 396pp. Professor Sachs makes a splendid case for dealing a death blow to poverty in our times. We have the resources, the technology and plans if the world community would want to put it into action. The only thing lacking really is the moral will to take the appropriate steps. Highly recommend this book. Time magazine dedicated a cover story, "How to End Proverty," to Professor Sachs and his book in their March 14, 2005 issue. The following website address connects one to an essay based on the book's theses; it is from an Australian website and what it says about Australia can be said as well about the the United States. makinghungerhistory.pdf A Lawyer's Journey: The Morris Dees Story, Morris Dees with Steve Fiffer. The American Bar Association, Chicago, 2001, 363pp. Edgar Ray Killen's conviction and sentencing recently reminds us of how racism has and still does play a role in our society. Morris Dees became committed to doing something about racism by using his lawyer's training and skills and opening the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org). Practicing law in the early 1960's in Alabama and other parts of the South led into the crucible of bigotry, racism, KKK activities, as well as the civil rights movement. Mr Dees and the loyal band working with him used the law to bring legal relief to many victims and put many perpetrators of bigoty and hate, especially the Klansmen, out of business. Story of an inspiring life and Center. Southern Poverty Law Center
