He lives in fraternity with other brothers serving the poor in Milwaukee's
downtown area. He has a masters in economics (1985), an STL (1990),
and a PhD in Theology (1989).
Mike's ministry is twofold: three-fourths is spent writing and speaking
about biblical spirituality geared for our "First World" society.
The other involves him in the corporate responsibility movement, advising
investors concerned about using their monies to promote social change.
More specifically, these include:
CONTEMPORARY SPIRITUALITY. Mike has written for a wide-range of journals, some of which are America, Church, New Theology Review and The Bible Today. He has written 17 books (some translated into Spanish and Portuguese). These include two books on celibacy and the best-selling Spirituality of the Beatitudes: Matthew’s Vision for the Church in an Unjust World (Orbis, 2005, in second printing). The original version went through 21 printings. The following books received awards in their categories from the Catholic Press Association of Canada and the United States: House of Disciples: Church, Economics and Justice in Matthew (Orbis, 1988), “Do You Love Me?:” Jesus Questions the Church (Orbis, 2000), The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us (Orbis, 2002) and Can Religious Life Be Prophetic? (Crossroad, 2005). His latest books are the expertly-acclaimed Finding Francis, Following Christ (Orbis, 2007) and The Paradox of Power: Moving from Control to Compassion in a World of Violence (Crossroad, 2008). Mike has also written for various encyclopedias and anthologies.
CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY. Mike authored Catholic Church Investments
for Corporate Social Responsibility (3rd printing); a portion was reprinted
in Origins. He coordinates the Tobacco Issue Group of the Interfaith
Center on Corporate Responsibility in New York (and served on its Board
many years). He has written in magazines such as Business and Society
Review, The British Medical Journal, The Corporate Examiner.
Mike has given retreats, workshops and lectures around these two areas in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. He also writes and speaks on the future of religious life. He filmed in Assisi a two-part video on St. Francis (St. Anthony Press, 1994). .
Michael was Collaborator to the Relatore for the Cause of the Beatification of Venerable Solanus Casey. He wrote the much reprinted Thank God Ahead of Time: The Life and Spirituality of Venerable Solanus Casey (St. Anthony Press, 2008). The two volume “Positio” he wrote for the Vatican has been published as Solanus Casey: The Official Account of a Virtuous American Life (Crossroad, 2000)..
Mike served his Province in leadership for two terms (1976-1981) and now sits on its Finance Ministry Council and the Solanus Casey Center Ministry Council. He serves on other boards, including the Flight Attendants Medical Research Institute (Miami), Mercy Investment Program (Philadelphia) and the Campaign for Economic Democracy (New York). He is a regular speaker at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress as well as many sabbatical programs (Berakah, New Directions, Sangre de Cristo and School of Applied Theology).
