A Prayer and A Prayer Unanswered | Una Oración y Una Oración Sin Respuesta

Wednesday of the 27th Week in Ordinary Time | Jonah 4:1-11; Luke 11:1-4
Today we are presented with a prayer and a prayer unanswered. When Jesus is asked by his disciples to teach them how to pray, he gifts them with a prayer that is elegantly concise and comprehensive. What we now call the Lord’s Prayer combines praise, submission, and petitions for our daily needs and God’s forgiveness and protection.
Jonah could have used that prayer, especially the part about “your will be done.” After initially fleeing God’s call to preach to the hated Ninevites, he accepted it only when caught in a storm, thrown overboard, swallowed by a fish, and vomited onto the shore. Finally, he did what God had called him to do: to go through Nineveh and proclaim the news of their imminent destruction. He then waited for Israel’s enemies to be vanquished.
What Jonah didn’t appreciate was the wideness of God’s mercy. When God witnessed the repentance of the Ninevites, from their king to their cattle, God relented in punishing them.
Jonah wasn’t pleased. He complained. He sulked. His pride was so wounded he prayed for death. God then reminded him of a small but significant grace he took for granted and how that same divine grace was extended to others who needed it more.
The next time I offer the Lord’s Prayer, I hope to remember all the graces I have already received, even as I ask for more. jc

Jonás no estaba contento.
