A True Friend and Disciple | Un Verdadero Amiga y Discípula

St. Martha

Luke 10:38-42; John 11:19-27

Martha is sometimes portrayed and then dismissed as an anxious whiner who doesn’t understand what’s important. That’s unfortunate and untrue.

The gospels reveal her as a good friend and true disciple of the Lord. She was able to freely share her frustration when she felt overwhelmed by the burdens of hospitality while her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. He felt equally free to respond to her in an honest way. When Martha poured out her heart to Jesus in grief over her brother Lazarus’ death, and when she also professed her faith in the Lord, he responded by raising Lazarus from the dead.

Do we feel free to “tell it like it is” to Jesus in prayer? (Hint: He won’t be shocked or surprised at anything we say.) St. Martha, pray that we may grow in faith and in emotional and spiritual freedom before the Lord.

St. Martha

Lucas 10:38-42; Juan 11:19-27
