Are you a good shepherd?

While the Latin and Spanish word for “shepherd” is pastor, shepherding in the life of the Church is more than priesthood or parish ministry.  Broadly speaking, any life dedicated to service and taking care of others entrusted to us is the work of a shepherd. Parents are the first shepherds of their children, and later catechists, coaches, chaplains, youth ministers, and others fill similar roles.

The prophet Ezekiel excoriates the religious and political leaders of Israel for “pasturing themselves,” exploiting, neglecting, and misleading those they were called to serve. Noticing the suffering of his people, God promises to remove those abusive shepherds. Further, he promises that he will personally step into their place. Psalm 23 reveals to us the content and quality of God’s shepherding: leading, guiding, nourishing, blessing, protecting, and walking with us.

In his parable of the landowner and laborers in today’s gospel reading, Jesus notes two other qualities of a good shepherd: generosity and equity.  He pays his day laborers the same daily wage, not to disdain the efforts of those who were hired first but rather to recognize the needs of those who were hired last.

St. John Eudes, who had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, ministered to plague victims, and founded a religious order to educate and form priests and another dedicated to providing refuge and escape for women involved in prostitution. Through his intercession, may we answer and fulfill God’s call to be shepherds whose service is marked by humility, fidelity, courage, and self-sacrifice. jc
