Creative Accounting

Friday of the 31st Week in Ordinary Time

Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 16:1-8

At first, it appears that Jesus in this parable is promoting “creative accounting” or dishonest business practices. Why would a business owner praise as prudent his irresponsible steward’s reduction of debts that were owed to his master?

This is where context is important.  It was a common practice in the economy of ancient Palestine for stewards to pad their masters’ accounts receivable to generate commissions for themselves.  The steward’s master, as well as the debtors, knew this.  By writing down their debts and foregoing his commissions, the steward was trying to ingratiate himself to people from whom he would soon be seeking a job.

Jesus wouldn’t commend the steward’s dishonesty.  Instead, he commends the man’s creativity and resourcefulness. He challenges us to be similarly creative and resourceful in spreading the gospel.  COVID-19 has forced this on us.  The Church can’t do everything as we used to; we need to change.

As we continue to stand firm in the Lord, may we also be open to the Holy Spirit’s movement, calling and pushing us to fulfill the mission of Jesus in new and creative ways. –jc

Contabilidad Creativa

-jc
