Democracy and Government | Democracia y Gobierno

St. Felix of Cantalice, St. John I
Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8

Winston Churchill once noted that “it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried from time to time….” Bringing people together to discuss, debate, discern and decide things is often messy. While not a democracy, the church has a long history of councils, synods, and other gatherings. We see the earliest example in today’s first reading, as the apostles gathered in Jerusalem to consider how to incorporate Gentiles into the Christian community.

The forms and circumstances may change, but the fundamental purpose of such gatherings remains the same: to ensure that we remain attached to Christ, the true vine, and to prune away whatever prevents his Church from being fruitful in the given time, places, and circumstance. It worked in the 1st century, and it can work in the 21st if we trust in the Holy Spirit and each other. - jc

San Félix de Cantalicio, San Juan I
Hechos 15:1-6; Juan 15:1-8

- jc
