God’s Providence in Families |  La Providencia de Dios en las Familias

December 17, 2025
Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Advent
Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Matthew 1:1-17

When you shake the family tree, not everything you find will be pretty, especially if you go back more than 40 generations!

St. Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus is filled with patriarchs and heroes, idolaters and tyrants. In human terms, he came from a line of surprise births and tragic deaths. While many of his earthly ancestors were kings, he was finally born of a carpenter and his young wife in a small town.

As we begin this final week of preparation for our celebration of Christmas and reflection on God’s great gift in the mystery of the Incarnation, take some time to reflect on the providential ways that God has worked through your family and their circumstances. Sometimes the greatest gifts are the ones we don’t easily notice or have come at the greatest cost. jc
