Gospel Feminist | Feminista del Evangelio

Today the Church remembers one of the extraordinary women of the middle ages: St. Clare of Assisi. A close friend of St. Francis, she founded what we now know as the Poor Clare sisters and the movement of Second Order Franciscans, women who live in cloistered communities.

At the risk of using what is sometimes a politically loaded term, Clare could be called a gospel feminist. Like her spiritual brother and father, Francis, she had a singular and radical vision of how God called her to live the gospel. This included an especially austere version of evangelical poverty.

She resisted and rejected the more conventional roles that many of the men in her life insisted upon. Her father and other male relatives wanted this beautiful, wise, gracious, strong, and holy young woman to be given to a man in a socially advantageous marriage.  Clare said no. Bishops and even the Pope insisted that she adopt a more moderate and conventional form of cloistered life. Clare said no. She sought and fought for what she called the “privilege of poverty” because she believed it was God’s will for her and her sisters.

Through the intercession of St. Clare of Assisi, we pray that the light of Christ will continue to bless women—young and old, single, religious, and married—with the vision of gospel life that God wills. We pray that the Church, through that same light of Christ, will have the wisdom and humility to welcome those visions, even when they challenge expectations, assumptions, and conventions.
