Grace upon Grace | Gracia sobre Gracia

Memorial of St. Sylvester I

1 John 2:18-21; John 1:1-18

I recently registered for a virtual 5K run. The theme was “Cheers to New Year’s 2021…Good Riddance, 2020.”  Many will judge the year that ends today as an annus horribilis. That’s not hard to understand.  The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by economic collapse, unemployment, and homelessness as well as sickness and death.  It has also unmasked a host of racial, cultural, geographical, political, and other divisions.

Like many, I won’t be sad to see 2020 in the rearview mirror.  But I can’t forget that Jesus was born into a troubled and often violent world.  He was exposed to the worst dimensions of our human weakness and sin.  He brought light, hope, peace, joy, healing, and life.

So, before we say goodbye to 2020, let’s pause and consider:

  • Where did we witness the presence of the Word made flesh, Jesus?
  • How did we testify to the light of Christ when we felt surrounded by darkness?
  • Who helped us to see the grace and truth of Christ?

This was a rough year, but if we look with the eyes of faith, we may also see that it was also a year of “grace upon grace.”  We have been stressed, but we have also been blessed. jc

Memoria de San Silvestre I

1 Juan 2:18-21; Juan 1:1-18
