Heart Transplant | Transplante de Corazón

St. Bernard

Ezekiel 36:23-28

Several years ago, I had open heart surgery to correct a congenital defect. It was a difficult experience. I had to endure not only the trauma of the surgery but also several more months of rehab as well as the treatment of post-operative infections, which involved another operation and two other hospitalizations.

That was just for the replacement of my aortic valve. Few of us can imagine what it is like to have a heart transplant. But that’s exactly what God promises to give his people returning from generations of exile in Babylon: “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.” This is major moral and spiritual surgery!

This time of pandemic has been marked by great disruptions and suffering. But it’s also been an opportunity to look at ourselves and at what and whom we value. In the months to come, may we not become infected with bitterness or paralyzing fear but discover that this time of trial has given us new hearts, filled with compassion, patience, humility and all of the virtues we need to become better people and a better society.

San Bernardo

Ezequiel 36:23-28
