Galatians 2:1-12, 7-14; Luke 11:1-4
One of the most difficult things to do in any relationship is to confront someone you care about with evidence of their hypocrisy. In our more honest and enlightened moments, we can admit we are not always consistent in living our faith. We sometimes say one thing but do something different. We preach one message but ignore it in practice. But it is one thing to accuse ourselves and quite another to accuse someone close to us.
Being accused of hypocrisy puts us on the defensive, and making the accusation potentially exposes our own vulnerability and sinfulness. It can seem easier to avoid confrontation altogether. Unfortunately, avoidance of a problem will not make it go away.
Paul needed to confront Cephas (Peter) and the other apostles when they wavered on their commitment to accepting gentiles into the community of believers without requiring their circumcision, as had been decided at the Council of Jerusalem (see Acts 15:1-35). The reality was that implementation of those decisions took time and was inconsistent, even for Paul with Timothy (see Acts 16:1-5).
Whether we are the one confronted or the one doing the confronting, the virtue of humility can help. The Lord’s Prayer roots us in that virtue. We acknowledge God’s holiness and pray for him to reign over us. We ask him to supply our daily needs, forgive our sins, and to deliver us in his mercy. Through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, may we grow in integrity of faith and have the courage to humbly stand up for what is right and respond to the call to conversion. jc
