1 Kings 2:1-4, 10-12; Mark 6:7-13

Today’s readings feature two sets of instructions, one from a dying king, and the other from the King of Kings.

In our first reading, David is on his deathbed. He has lived a long life and has reigned as King of Israel for 40 years. His life has been filled with great triumphs like his unlikely victory over Goliath and shameful chapters like his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband, Uriah. Solomon, David’s son through Bathsheba, will be his successor.

David counsels Solomon to be obedient to God and his commandments. He assures Solomon that if he remains faithful to God, he will see great success and will always have a descendant on the throne of Israel. As we will witness in the coming days, while Solomon is blessed with great wisdom, he is far from perfect. He is sometimes disobedient to God. As a consequence, the nation of Israel will be divided.

In our gospel reading, Jesus sends the Twelve to carry his mission of preaching repentance and healing those suffering bodily and spiritually. He admonishes them to travel lightly, with nothing but a walking stick, sandals, and faith in his authority. It is a time of hope as well as judgment, for casting out demons and anointing the sick as well as shaking the dust from their feet in testimony against those who will not welcome them. The Twelve do as directed, and they find his power working in them.

We are blessed to have many sets of instructions, beginning with the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus. We pray for the wisdom, humility, courage, and faith to follow them. - jc

1 Reyes 2:1-4, 10-12; Marcos 6:7-13

- jc
