Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi
Galatians 6:14-18; Luke 9:23-26

Today the Church universal remembers St. Robert Bellarmine, the great Jesuit bishop, theologian, and teacher. However, the Franciscan Family has the privilege of celebrating the feast of the stigmatization of their founder. St. Francis received the marks of Christ in his hands, feet, and side at La Verna in 1224, just two years before his death.

There have been other men and women who have received the stigmata. The most famous in our recent memory is St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio), a Capuchin friar who died in 1968. He often wondered why God had chosen him to receive such a grace and burden.

St. Francis probably had similar questions. His biographers, however, did not. They saw in the stigmata the confirmation of his radical imitation of Christ. He practiced self-denial, he daily accepted the crosses that came to him, and he followed in the footsteps of the Lord.
None of us are likely to receive the stigmata. But we make the sign of the cross, sometimes many times each day. I must confess that sometimes I do so rather mindlessly, carelessly, or hurriedly.

The sign of the cross is worth all our attention and reverence. It’s a sign of God’s love for us. It’s the sign under which we were baptized and have been saved. It’s the sign that we’re disciples of Jesus. No matter how often we make the sign of the cross, may we always do so with mindfulness, gratitude, and conviction.

Hoy la Iglesia universal recuerda a San Roberto Bellarmino, el gran obispo jesuita, teólogo y maestro. Sin embargo, la Familia Franciscana tiene el privilegio de celebrar la fiesta de la estigmatización de su fundador. San Francisco recibió las marcas de Cristo en sus manos, pies y costado en La Verna en 1224, sólo dos años antes de su muerte.
Ha habido otros hombres y mujeres que han recibido los estigmas. El más famoso en nuestra memoria reciente es San Pío de Pietrelcina (Padre Pío), un fraile capuchino que murió en 1968. A menudo se preguntaba por qué Dios lo había elegido para recibir tal gracia y carga.

San Francisco probablemente tenía preguntas similares. Sus biógrafos, sin embargo, no las tenían. Vieron en los estigmas la confirmación de su imitación radical de Cristo. Practicó la abnegación, aceptó diariamente las cruces que le llegaban y siguió los pasos del Señor.

Ninguno de nosotros es probable que reciba los estigmas. Pero hacemos la señal de la cruz, a veces muchas veces al día. Debo confesar que a veces lo hago sin pensar, sin cuidado o con prisa.

La señal de la cruz merece toda nuestra atención y reverencia. Es una señal del amor de Dios por nosotros. Es la señal bajo la cual fuimos bautizados y nos hemos salvado. Es la señal de que somos discípulos de Jesús. No importa cuán a menudo nos hagamos la señal de la cruz, que siempre lo hagamos con atención, gratitud y convicción.
