Mary Magdalene | María Magdalena

St. Mary Magdalene
2 Corinthians 5:14-17; John 20:1-2, 11-18

Although we do not know if she received baptism, Mary Magdalene was certainly “a new creation.” According to Luke 1:1-3, she was among a group of Galilean women who accompanied and supported Jesus and the Twelve. These women “had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities,” and it is noted that “seven demons” had gone out of “Mary, called Magdalene.” She became one of the Lord’s most trusted disciples.

Today we are reminded that Mary Magdalene was the first witness of the resurrection of Jesus. Initially, she supposed that his body had been stolen or was missing. It was only when she personally encountered Jesus in the garden near the tomb that she understood what had really happened. He was alive! She ran and told the other disciples.

As with Mary Magdalene, the full import of Christ’s resurrection comes to us gradually, through our own conversion and experiences of his presence and grace in our lives.  When we are moved by those experiences, we naturally want to hold on to our senses of joy, comfort, and security.

But Jesus tells us what he told Mary: “Stop holding on to me.” Life in Christ means sharing the good news of what we have received with others and trusting in his further movement in our lives. - jc

Santa María Magdalena
2 Corintios 5:14-17; Juan 20:1-2, 11-18

- jc
