Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
2 Corinthians 5:14-17; John 20:1-2, 11-18
The author Eric Jong has lamented, “I’ve never been able to control my public image.”
St. Mary Magdalene would likely agree. For centuries, she has been portrayed as what used to be called “a fallen woman.” The Gospel of Luke notes that she was among a group of female followers of Jesus “who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities” and she had seven demons cast out of her. The other gospels, however, are largely silent on her background. Over time, her identity was conflated with other unnamed women in the gospels who were considered notorious sinners.
It’s better for us to focus on what we do know about her. She was not only a follower of Jesus, but she was also among the most faithful. While virtually all of the apostles abandoned the Lord as he was arrested, tried, condemned and crucified, Mary Magdalene remained near him. She saw him die and witnessed his interment. As today’s gospel reading recalls, she was also the first witness of his resurrection, though she did not immediately understand it. She served as an apostle (messenger) to the apostles.
Impelled by her love of Christ, Mary followed him, stood by him in his greatest suffering, and announced the startling fact that the one who had been buried was no longer so. When the risen Jesus revealed himself to her, she announced the good news with joy. She reminds us that the grace of God can be at work in all of us and for us to look for that grace especially in those who are marginalized and misunderstood. Jc

Fiesta de Santa María Magdalena
2 Corintios 5, 14-17; Juan 20, 1-2, 11-18
Jc
