Merry Christmas | Feliz Navidad

Isaiah 57:7-10; Hebrews 1:1-6; John 1:1-18

A couple of weeks ago, someone sent me the video of a Christmas TV commercial of a popular soft drink. The commercial, produced in Italian with English subtitles, tells the story of a boy with dreams of a happy Christmas and how they are realized when his father, a carpenter, and people from the nearby town rebuild an old bridge. This enables Santa Claus, who now travels by semi-truck rather than a sleigh, to bring Christmas cheer to the boy, his family, and the town.

The rebuilt bridge that we celebrated today is far more profound. Through the mystery of the Incarnation and the Paschal mystery that followed, God in his great love for us (John 3:16) has given us a strong and eternal bridge:

• A bridge between God and us.
• A bridge between divinity and humanity.
• A bridge between spirit and flesh.
• A bridge that brings salvation to sinners.
• A bridge that brings reconciliation to the alienated.
• A bridge that brings light to those in darkness.
• A bridge that brings life to those who dwell in the shadows of death.

Today, more than ever, we give thanks for that bridge: the Word made flesh, our light in darkness, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas! jc

Hace un par de semanas, alguien me envió el video de un comercial de TV de Navidad de un popular refresco. El comercial, producido en italiano con subtítulos en inglés, cuenta la historia de un niño con sueños de una feliz Navidad y cómo se realizan cuando su padre, un carpintero, y la gente del pueblo cercano reconstruyen un viejo puente. Esto permite a Santa Claus, que ahora viaja en semicamión en lugar de en trineo, llevar la alegría navideña al niño, a su familia y al pueblo.

 

El puente reconstruido que celebramos hoy es mucho más profundo. A través del misterio de la Encarnación y el misterio pascual que le siguió, Dios en su gran amor por nosotros (Juan 3:16) nos ha dado un puente fuerte y eterno:

• Un puente entre Dios y nosotros.
• Un puente entre la divinidad y la humanidad.
• Un puente entre el espíritu y la carne.
• Un puente que trae la salvación a los pecadores.
• Un puente que trae la reconciliación a los alienados.
• Un puente que lleva la luz a los que están en la oscuridad.
• Un puente que trae vida a los que viven en las sombras de la muerte.

Hoy, más que nunca, damos gracias por ese puente: el Verbo hecho carne, nuestra luz en la oscuridad, Jesucristo. ¡Feliz Navidad! jc
