Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus

2 Timothy 1:1-8; Luke 10:1-9

Today we remember two men who worked closely with St. Paul.  Timothy continued Paul’s work in Ephesus, while Titus did the same in Crete.  Both were considered episkopoi, that is, overseers or bishops of their local churches.  Both, like St. Paul, died for the faith.

In our first reading, Paul reminds Timothy that his faith was nurtured by his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois.  Before Timothy ministered in the wider church, his faith was kindled by two holy women in the domestic church, not only by word but also by example.

Paul, Timothy, and Titus were true missionary disciples, traveling and proclaiming the gospel far from home and following the 72 that Jesus sends out in today’s gospel reading.  Whether we continue that mission on the road or closer to home, the principles of missionary discipleship are essentially the same:  prepare for a challenge; proclaim the kingdom of God; be an instrument of God’s compassion and healing power; and trust in God’s providence and the help of others.

The harvest remains abundant. Workers are needed and welcome!  jc

Memoria de Ss. Timoteo y Tito

2 Timoteo 1:1-8; Lucas 10:1-9
