Monks for a Year | Monjes por un Año

St. Benedict of Nursia

Today the Church remembers the saint considered the founder of monasticism in the West. Today we also bid farewell to the young Capuchins who have completed their novitiate here at San Lorenzo. Their class started with thirteen, and the discernment process has winnowed them down to five.

In some ways, our year of novitiate is an anomaly. We live like semi-cloistered monks in a rural setting to help men discern and prepare to be friars who live in minister in some of our country’s largest cities. Novices do little ministry outside the novitiate. They spend several hours each day in prayer and contemplation. In a typical friary, that time is greatly reduced and is instead filled with ministry and studies.

Why live like a monk to learn how to become a friar?

Part of the answer lies in the Latin phrase, ora et labora, “prayer and work.” These are two foundations in the lives of both the monastic and mendicant orders, though we live them according to our own charisms. As friars, we don’t celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours like monks (except in the novitiate), but we nevertheless do so with devotion. The bulk of our work is outside the friary (except in the novitiate), but we also perform manual tasks at home to develop virtues like humility, diligence, and service.

Gary, Igor, José, Steven, and Anthony have successfully completed their year as monks. Please pray for them as they make their first professions and continue their lives as friars.
