Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter
Acts 8:1b-8; John 6:35-40
Today is Earth Day, which began in 1970 as a way to raise awareness of threats to our environment and the things we can do to protect our common home. The theme of this year’s edition is, “Our Power, Our Planet.” It highlights the responsibility, stewardship and capacity that people have to prevent, mitigate and even reverse some of the destruction of our environment. It is a task for generations and essential to the health of our world—an existential struggle.
Existential struggle has been part of the Church’s life from the beginning. Today’s first reading recounts how, immediately after the martyrdom of St. Stephen, “a severe persecution” came upon the Church in Jerusalem. Yet even as many scattered, they remained faithful to their mission to proclaim the gospel. Philip was one of them, and God worked through him to heal many of their spiritual and physical illnesses.
How did they manage? They were blessed with the power of the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Bread of Life. Today, as the Church continues to be persecuted in various ways in many parts of the world and as we try to bring the gospel to bear on the call to environmental stewardship and the many challenges we face, we can draw strength from those same two gifts to persevere. They are our power. jc

Miércoles de la tercera semana de Pascua
Hechos 8, 1b-8; Juan 6, 35-40
