Only One is Worthy | Sólo Uno es Digno

Dedication of the Basilica of Ss. Peter & Paul

Revelation 4:1-11; Luke 19:11-28

Today’s first reading presents us with a powerful vision of God in glory. Around God’s throne are 24 others, twelve for the tribes of Israel and twelve for the apostles. Before the throne are seven torches representing the spirits of God (in Jewish numerology seven meant perfection and completeness). Flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder are common biblical signs of a theophany or manifestation of God’s presence.

Before God are four living creatures, which were also part of the apocalyptic vision of the prophet Ezekiel (Ez 1:5-21). In that vision, they represent various animate beings in God’s creation: wild and domesticated animals, birds, and humans. The lion, calf or ox, man, and eagle will later come to be associated with the evangelists, those who wrote the gospels that animate the belief and actions of all followers of Christ: Mark, Luke, Matthew, and John, respectively.

The elders and living creatures all direct their attention to God, offering their words of praise for the One who lives forever.

In the Parable of the Talents, Jesus reminds us that we are stewards of a great treasure.  As the story reveals, because of human weakness, there can be doubt about how well that treasure will be used. But there is no doubt about whom it comes from and to whom it all must some day be returned: the One who alone is worthy of our praise and devotion, the One in whom we live, and move and have our being (cf. Acts 17:24-28).

Dedicación de la Basílica de San Pedro y San Pablo

Apocalipsis 4:1-11; Lucas 19:11-28
