Pruning—Then and Now | La Poda, Entonces y Ahora

Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8

I’m in the process of moving, and it has reawakened in me a dream that one day I will be able to move all my possessions in one carload (OK, maybe a minivan). I am not there yet, but I am closer than ever.

Moving involves a process of pruning. We separate the essential from the superfluous. We let go of some things not to make room for more but instead to learn to live better with less.

Our lives as disciples of Jesus are the lives of pilgrims. We’re on a lifetime journey, and each time we move along the way we have opportunities to do some pruning. With God’s help, we cut away the unproductive or self-destructive branches of our sins, bad habits, harmful attitudes, and emotional wounds. It’s how we grow.

The Church, with disciples as its members, is also a pilgrim. As we move along the pathway history, we have been pruned many times and in different ways. In our earliest moments, we faced the question of how much of the Mosaic Law new members needed to observe. What needed to be kept and what could be pruned so that the Church could be more vital and grow?

It’s a question that we still need to ask today, and it still demands an answer.

Hechos 15:1-6; Juan 15:1-8
