Reckonings | Cuentas

Saturday of the 33rd Week in Ordinary Time
1 Maccabees 6:1-13; Luke 20:27-40

We hear a lot these days about reckonings. Some of them are for personal transgressions. Others for social, historical, or cultural injustices or crimes. In all cases, those reckonings are manifestations of human sin, mortality, and their consequences.

Antiochus Epiphanes IV had his reckoning when he was confronted with the limits of his power. A tyrant, he lived in the delusion that he was loved, only to learn that he was not even feared by the children of Israel who rebelled against his oppression.

The Sadducees denied the resurrection and tried to set what they thought was a clever intellectual trap for Jesus. But he sidestepped their question and reminded them that their God, the God of their ancestors, was a God of the living.

As we near the end of another liturgical year, we pray for the grace to learn and grow from our reckonings. - jc

Sábado de la 33ª semana del tiempo ordinario
1 Macabeos 6,1-13; Lucas 20,27-40

- jc
