Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist
Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-60, 80

Parenting has always been a challenge, but with advances in medicine and communications technology it seems more complicated than ever. Some parents feel compelled to share ultrasound images of their children in utero, while others throw sometimes lavish gender reveal parties, complete with balloons and fireworks (not a good combination).

The conception and birth of John the Baptist were no less remarkable. Zechariah and Elizabeth had given up hope of having a child when God stepped in and, through the angel Gabriel, told them that they would be blessed with a son who would be filled with the Holy Spirit and be given a prophetic mission to prepare them to receive the Lord. Months later, Gabriel would visit Elizabeth’s kinswoman, Mary, and announce an even more miraculous and world-changing birth.

Zechariah and Elizabeth gave their son the name God commanded and no one expected: John (in Hebrew, Johanan), which means “God is gracious.” The child they received was destined to become like the “sharp-edged sword” and “polished arrow” prophesied by Isaiah, calling his people to repentance and baptism as a sign of their cleansing and renewal.  We honor John the Baptist for his fidelity to his God-given purpose in life, even to the point of martyrdom, and we ask his intercession that we may also be faithful to our vocations, whatever they may be. jc
