Friday of the 5th Week in Ordinary Time
In our gospel reading, Jesus opens the mouth and ears of a man by giving him the gifts of speech and hearing. He does it in a very earthy and visceral way, with spit, touch, and a loud groan.
In our first reading, the serpent tempts Eve with the promise of a new and godlike openness of mind and sight. She and Adam choose the serpent’s lie over obedience to God and trust in God’s faithfulness. Their eyes and minds are opened, but not in the ways that the serpent promised. We will soon read about the tragic consequences of their choice.
God wants us to see, hear, and understand; and through the gifts of revelation and wisdom, we can. But when we refuse to humbly accept our human limitations and try to become demigods, we falter. We can know many things; but we will never know everything. We can see many things; but we can only see so far. We can do things that our ancestors could have not imagined; but we are human beings just the same.
God our Creator, Lord of heaven and earth, we thank you for the gifts of our senses and the amazing power of our brains. Help us to trust in you and your direction and to use all you have given us for your glory and in service to your kingdom. jc

Viernes de la 5ª semana del tiempo ordinario
En nuestra lectura evangélica, Jesús abre la boca y los oídos de un hombre concediéndole los dones del habla y del oído. Lo hace de una manera muy terrenal y visceral, con saliva, tacto y un fuerte gemido.
En nuestra primera lectura, la serpiente tienta a Eva con la promesa de una apertura mental y visual nueva y divina. Ella y Adán eligen la mentira de la serpiente en lugar de la obediencia a Dios y la confianza en la fidelidad de Dios. Sus ojos y sus mentes se abren, pero no de la manera que la serpiente prometió. Pronto leeremos las trágicas consecuencias de su elección.
Dios quiere que veamos, oigamos y entendamos; y a través de los dones de revelación y sabiduría, podemos hacerlo. Pero cuando nos negamos a aceptar humildemente nuestras limitaciones humanas y tratamos de convertirnos en semidioses, flaqueamos. Podemos saber muchas cosas; pero nunca lo sabremos todo. Podemos ver muchas cosas; pero sólo podemos ver hasta cierto punto. Podemos hacer cosas que nuestros antepasados no podían imaginar; pero somos seres humanos igualmente.
Dios nuestro Creador, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, te damos las gracias por los dones de nuestros sentidos y el asombroso poder de nuestros cerebros. Ayúdanos a confiar en ti y en tu dirección y a utilizar todo lo que nos has dado para tu gloria y en servicio de tu reino. jc
