The Final Frontier

Acts 5:17-26; John 3:16-20

Today is Earth Day, a day to contemplate the blessings and wonders of our planet. This Friday will mark the 30th Anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, an instrument that has revolutionized our understanding of the universe, revealing the existence of thousands of galaxies, some of them billions of light years away. It is making what was once incomprehensible a little more comprehensible while inviting us to a deeper exploration of the mysteries of space, what Capt. Kirk in Star Trek called “the final frontier.”

God’s love for us is even more incomprehensible in its depth, breadth and height, especially in light of our human weakness, willfulness and sin. But it has been made concrete and three-dimensional in Jesus, the Light of the World, a light exposes evil with a resolution that the Hubble cannot match. But more importantly, the source of this light is love; and because of that, it also has the power to heal and transform. Here on earth, the human heart remains “the final frontier.”
