The Leadership of Jesus | El Liderazgo de Jesús

St. Augustine of Canterbury
1 Peter 18:25; Mark 10:32-45

There are countless books, conferences, and courses on leadership. Some can cost thousands of dollars. At the foundation of each of them is a fundamental choice between leading as a ruler and leading as a servant. Having power over others is different than having power for and with them.

When he was confronted with the ambitions of the sons of Zebedee, Jesus first asked if they were ready to share in costs of leadership. Although they readily affirmed their readiness, it seems that Jesus wasn’t so sure. So, he spelled it out for them: greatness means service and self-sacrifice. Then, as St. Peter recalls, Jesus showed them by offering himself on the cross.

When the St. Augustine we remember today was sent by St. Gregory the Great to evangelize the fierce Anglo-Saxons, he and those who accompanied him wanted to turn around. Pope Gregory wouldn’t let them. They kept on, and within a few years, they had converted King Ethelbert and thousands of others.

The leadership course that Jesus gives us is simple and doesn’t cost us anything…except our wills, our egos, and our lives. jc
