The Luck of the Draw | La Suerte del Sorteo

Acts 1:15-17, 20-26; John 15:9-17

When the Green Bay Packers hosted the Seattle Seahawks in an NFL playoff game in 2003, the game went into overtime. When the Seahawks won the coin toss before the extra period, Matt Hasselbeck, their quarterback, said that they would receive the kickoff.  He confidently added, “We’re going to score.”  

Hasselback soon regretted those words. On the Seahawks’ second possession in overtime, he threw an interception, which the Packers’ Al Harris returned for a touchdown and a Packers victory. 

So much for the luck of the draw.

St. Matthias may have felt something similar not long after he drew a lot to succeed Judas as one of the Twelve. After all, it destined him to share in the ultimate lot that befell all but one of them: martyrdom.  

What Matthias had doing for him, however, was that his selection was preceded by discernment and prayer. The brothers and sisters gathered and selected two candidates.  Then they prayed and left the final selection in God’s hands.  

At the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples: “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain….” 

Matthias was an heir to that choice. We are, too. We have also been appointed and called to bear fruit that will remain for those who will come after us.

Cuando los Green Bay Packers recibieron a los Seattle Seahawks en un partido de desempate de NFL en 2003, el juego entró en tiempo extra. Cuando los Seahawks ganaron el lanzamiento de moneda antes de la prórroga, Matt Hasselbeck, su quarterback, dijo que recibirían el saque inicial. Añadió con confianza: "Vamos a marcar".  

Hasselback pronto se arrepintió de esas palabras. En la segunda posesión de los Seahawks en la prórroga, lanzó una interceptación, que el Al Harris de los Packers devolvió para un touchdown y una victoria de los Packers. 

Demasiado para la suerte del sorteo.

San Matías pudo haber sentido algo similar no mucho después de que sorteó mucho para suceder a Judas como uno de los Doce. Después de todo, lo destinó a compartir el destino final que le tocó a todos menos a uno de ellos: el martirio.  

Lo que Matías había hecho por él, sin embargo, era que su selección fue precedida por el discernimiento y la oración. Los hermanos y hermanas se reunieron y seleccionaron dos candidatos. Luego rezaron y dejaron la selección final en las manos de Dios.  

En la última cena, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "No me habéis elegido vosotros a mí, sino que yo os he elegido a vosotros y os he destinado para que vayáis y deis fruto que permanezca..."  

Matthias era un heredero de esa elección. Nosotros también lo somos. También hemos sido designados y llamados a dar el fruto que permanecerá para los que vendrán después de nosotros.
