The Other Side of the Coin | La Otra Cara de la Moneda

Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21

The past couple of days, we have been edified by Jesus’ commandment to his disciples to love one another, his assurances that they have been chosen by him and are his friends.

What rich blessings!

Today we hear the other side of the coin of discipleship and friendship with Jesus: the hatred of the world and persecution. It was a sobering message but a necessary one. Since the Church began our annual liturgical journey through the Acts of the Apostles, we have witnessed the church growing but persecuted: heckled, imprisoned, flogged, stoned, and killed. Our walk with Jesus includes moments of inspiration, healing, learning and joy; but it also includes the cross (Luke 9:23).

None of us, if we are healthy, looks for persecution or another cross to bear. But if we are trying to follow Jesus with integrity, those things will come to us.

We will make mistakes. We will do things that are contrary to what we profess. Some of our crosses are of our own making.

True friendship can be costly. Friendship with Jesus certainly is; but it is also priceless.

Los últimos días, hemos sido edificados por el mandamiento de Jesús a sus discípulos de amarse los unos a los otros, sus garantías de que han sido elegidos por él y son sus amigos. ¡Qué ricas bendiciones!

Hoy escuchamos la otra cara de la moneda del discipulado y la amistad con Jesús: el odio del mundo y la persecución. Fue un mensaje aleccionador pero necesario. Desde que la Iglesia comenzó nuestro viaje litúrgico anual a través de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, hemos sido testigos del crecimiento de la Iglesia pero perseguida: abucheada, encarcelada, azotada, apedreada y asesinada. Nuestro camino con Jesús incluye momentos de inspiración, sanación, aprendizaje y alegría; pero también incluye la cruz (Lucas 9:23).

Ninguno de nosotros, si estamos sanos, busca la persecución u otra cruz que llevar. Pero si estamos tratando de seguir a Jesús con integridad, esas cosas vendrán a nosotros.

Cometeremos errores. Haremos cosas que son contrarias a lo que profesamos. Algunas de nuestras cruces son de nuestra propia fabricación.

La verdadera amistad puede ser costosa. La amistad con Jesús ciertamente lo es; pero también es invaluable.
