The Tension of the Christmas Season | La Tensión de la Temporada Navideña

December 31, 2025
Seventh Day in the Octave of Christmas
(St. Sylvester I, Pope)
1 John 2:18-21; John 1:1-18

One of the tensions of the Church’s celebration of the Christmas season (which this year ends on January 11) is between the joy of  our Savior’s birth with its serious consequences.  Within days of rejoicing of the Nativity of the Lord, we remember the martyrdom of St. Stephen (December 26) and St. Thomas Becket (December 29), along with the slaughter of the Holy Innocents in Bethlehem (December 28). In today’s first reading, St. John the Evangelist (December 29) warns us that “it is the last hour…many antichrists have appeared.”

Our gospel reading is the same as for the Mass on Christmas Day, the prologue of the Gospel of John. It offers us words of hope: “What came to be through him was life, / and this life was the light of the human race; / the light shines in the darkness, / and the darkness has not overcome it.”  At the same time, it offers us words of caution: “the world did not know him” and “his own people did not accept him.”

The Kingdom of God is not yet realized in all its fullness, so these tensions remain. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, but our world still resists him and his gospel.  We realize that, as sinners in a pilgrim Church, we are sometimes among the resisters. We pray for grace to allow the Word to be more firmly planted in our hearts and minds and revealed in our thoughts, words, and deeds. jc

Séptimo día de la octava de Navidad
(San Silvestre I, Papa)
1 Juan 2:18-21; Juan 1:1-18
