The way of Humility | El Camino de la Humildad

Jeremiah 18:18-20; Matthew 20:17-28

He really meant it.

When Jesus first foretold his passion, death and resurrection, St. Peter rebuked him (Matthew 16:21-23). When the Lord later repeated his prediction, his disciples were “overwhelmed with grief” (Matthew 17:22-23).  When he did it a third time (Matthew 21:17-19), the mother of the sons of Zebedee sought to ensure that they would have privileged places in his kingdom.

Jesus responded to her request with respect but also a tough question for her sons: “Can you drink from the chalice that I am going to drink?”  It was the same chalice of fidelity and suffering that Jeremiah and the other prophets had endured.

When their fellow apostles heard of James’ and John’s ambition, they resented it. In the face of their contention, Jesus challenged them to consider the difference between the worldly greatness they were seeking and the other-worldly greatness that he embodied. It was the difference between arrogance and humility, dominance and service, self-seeking and self-sacrifice. He demonstrated those differences all the way to the cross. With one exception, they all chose the way of humility, service and self-sacrifice. May we follow their example. jc
