To Light and Guard, Rule and Guide | A la Luz y a la Guardia, Regla y Guía

Holy Guardian Angels

Job 38:1, 12-21, 40:3-5; Psalm 139; Matthew 18:1-5, 10

When I was a child, my father taught us how to pray. At night, before we went to sleep, we would kneel next to the bed and say our prayers. One of them was this:

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

to whom God’s love commits me here,

ever this night be at my side,

to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

I didn’t realize it then, but Dad was helping to lay the foundation for a life of prayer and ultimately my vocation. I will always be grateful to him, as well as the Lord, for that gift.

Guardian angels remind us that none of us, no matter how successful or holy we seem to others or ourselves, is a self-made man or woman. None of us alone has the wisdom we need to understand the world or to make the right decisions. All of us, whether we realize it or not, have been blessed by the presence and gifts of others in our lives. Like the “little ones” Jesus mentions in our gospel reading are dependent on their parents, so we are dependent on God and his grace to enter the kingdom.

I haven’t forgotten to say that prayer to my guardian angel.

Santos Ángeles Custodios

Job 38:1, 12-21, 40:3-5; Salmo 139; Mateo 18:1-5, 10

No he olvidado decir esa oración a mi ángel guardián.
