Truth and Freedom
Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; John 8:31-42

“The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.” When I first saw that years ago on a poster, I thought it seemed rather cynical. Time and experience, however, have shown that it’s also often true.

There is freedom in proclaiming and receiving the truth. When I participate in the Sacrament of Penance and share the truth of my sins, my sorrow for them, and my trust in God’s grace and mercy, I leave the confessional with a lightened heart and conscience.  But I am also aware of the work of conversion that lies in front of me.

Elected officials who are honest about things like taxes and spending may be lauded for their integrity, but they are too often defeated in elections. Public health professionals who warn us about the risks of certain behaviors are often thanked for their service while their advice is ignored or challenged by those who chafe at the inconvenience of changing how they live.

The three young men told the truth to the King of Babylon—they would serve only the God of their ancestors—and it so enraged him that he sought to have them immolated in a furnace. Jesus told his opponents of the truth of his relationship with the Father and of their distance from him—and they sought to kill him. When we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion in a few days, we will remember that they succeeded.

But Jesus would not remain in the tomb for long. He would rise. The truth, too, may be smothered or denied, it may pass through a fiery furnace or on a cross, but it cannot be suppressed forever. - jc

Verdad y Libertad
Daniel 3,14-20, 91-92, 95; Juan 8,31-42

- jc
