Why, Lord? | ¿Por qué, Señor?

Ss. Martha, Mary and Lazarus
Jeremiah 15:10, 16-21; John 11:19-27

“Why, Lord?”

Jeremiah the prophet asked that question when he suffered persecution at the hands of his own people and their leaders for doing no more than what God called him to do. Martha, and her sister Mary asked it of Jesus when they met him on the road to Bethany after their brother Lazarus died.

All of us can probably remember times when we have asked that question. Perhaps we or someone we love was suffering from an injury or illness. Perhaps we were mourning the loss of a friend, family member, relationship, parish, or job. Perhaps we were watching, listening or reading about people far away whose lives were forever changed by natural disasters or devastated by the human disaster of war.

God answered Jeremiah, assuring him that he would be protected and strengthened. Jesus assured Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Martha believed him and his promise.  Not long after, Jesus confirmed her faith by raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:32-44).

Like Jeremiah, Martha and Mary, we sometimes receive an answer directly from God. More often, however, God seems silent. The answers we seek remain a mystery or they come to us indirectly and over time. No matter how God responds, we can be assured of God’s love, compassion, and desire to save us, even when salvation comes in the ways we do not expect. Just ask Jeremiah and Martha. jc

Solo pregúntales a Jeremías y a Marta. jc
