Jonah 3:1-10; Luke 11:29-32

“You should know better.”

That seems to be what Jesus is telling those who continue to demand a sign from him. Many of them claimed to have special insight into God and his will, yet they couldn’t recognize the presence of God’s Son in their midst. He points out a paradox from the Scriptures: pagans sometimes seem to have deeper faith and respond more fully to God’s presence than those who are God’s chosen people.  He mentions the Queen of the South who was amazed by Solomon’s God-given wisdom and the people of Nineveh who responded to Jonah’s warning.

The Ninevites were not only pagans but enemies of Israel.  Jonah initially tried to escape God’s call to preach to them. It was only after he weathered a storm on the seas, was thrown overboard, and was swallowed and then vomited onto shore by a fish that he repented and did what God commanded. No sooner had he started preaching his message of destruction in Nineveh that the people, great and small, and even the beasts, responded with fasting, sackcloth and ashes. God saw their repentance and responded with compassion and mercy. 

God doesn’t care about our social status or how close to him we claim to be. He wants hearts open to conversion and actions that correspond to that change.  We do know better. Through God’s grace, may we speak and act better, too. jc

«Deberíais saberlo mejor».

Eso parece ser lo que Jesús les dice a aquellos que siguen exigiéndole una señal. Muchos de ellos afirmaban tener un conocimiento especial de Dios y su voluntad, pero no eran capaces de reconocer la presencia del Hijo de Dios entre ellos. Él señala una paradoja de las Escrituras: los paganos a veces parecen tener una fe más profunda y responder más plenamente a la presencia de Dios que aquellos que son el pueblo elegido de Dios. Menciona a la reina del Sur, que se maravilló de la sabiduría que Dios le había dado a Salomón, y al pueblo de Nínive, que respondió a la advertencia de Jonás.

Los ninivitas no solo eran paganos, sino también enemigos de Israel. Jonás inicialmente trató de escapar del llamado de Dios para predicarles. Solo después de haber soportado una tormenta en el mar, haber sido arrojado por la borda y haber sido tragado y luego vomitado en la orilla por un pez, se arrepintió e hizo lo que Dios le había mandado. Tan pronto como comenzó a predicar su mensaje de destrucción en Nínive, el pueblo, grande y pequeño, e incluso las bestias, respondieron con ayuno, cilicio y cenizas. Dios vio su arrepentimiento y respondió con compasión y misericordia.

A Dios no le importa nuestra posición social ni lo cerca que decimos estar de él. Él quiere corazones abiertos a la conversión y acciones que correspondan a ese cambio. Nosotros lo sabemos mejor. Por la gracia de Dios, que también podamos hablar y actuar mejor. jc
