Your Word is Truth | Tu palabra es verdad

Wednesday of the 7th Week of Easter

Acts 20:28-38; Luke 17:11b-19

A couple of weeks ago, a friar showed me a video of Pope Leo XIV on YouTube. The Pope was proclaiming something that seemed contrary to what we have observed about him and his personality. In addition, while he was speaking in English he was doing so with what sounded like a South African accent.

It was a “deep fake,” a video produced by artificial intelligence (AI). Because of its flaws, it was rather easy to detect.  Unfortunately, the capacities of AI and the skills of those who use it are galloping ahead of our capacities to distinguish what is true and to ethically use it.

Our readings today remind us that the battle between truth and falsehood isn’t new. In his speech to the presbyters of Ephesus, St. Paul warned them of “savage wolves” who would “pervert the truth” for their own selfish ends. As he draws closer to Jerusalem on his final journey, Jesus asks his Father to guide and protect them. “Consecrate them in the truth,” he prays and adds, “Your word is truth.”

As we draw closer to Pentecost, we pray that the Holy Spirit will guard and guide each of us and the Church so that we may remain rooted in the truth. jc

Miércoles de la séptima semana de Pascua

Hechos 20, 28-38; Lucas 17, 11b-19
