Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 58:7-10; Psalm 112; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16

This past Wednesday, we had a public meeting to receive the decisions of Cardinal Cupich for the future of our parish and others in the Renew My Church process. There is more detailed information in today’s bulletin, but I want to share with you personally the main points:

• Our parish will be unified or merged into St. Rita of Cascia Parish effective July 1.
• Our church is not closing! However, its status will change. After July 1 it will exist as a chapel or mission of St. Rita. We will continue to have some Masses and other activities and celebrations in this church, and we will explore additional ways to use it. 
• As of July 1, Fr. Homero Sanchez, OSA, the current Pastor of St. Rita, will be our Pastor. Let’s give him our full support.
• The Capuchin friars living at San Jose Friary (the former convent at St. Clare of Montefalco) will continue to support the pastoral and sacramental ministries of parishes in the area--particularly St. Rita in service to the Pastor and the parish leadership--as well as elsewhere in the Archdiocese.
• This is an end of one chapter. But it is the beginning of another.

The shape of our church is changing, but the essential mission that Jesus gives us in today’s gospel reading remains the same:

We are called to be the salt of the earth.

• Salt is a preservative. We must continue to pass on to our children and grandchildren the timeless truths of our faith. But we need to present them in ways that are relevant today.
• Salt is used to purify. We must commit ourselves to grow more and more in holiness, not so we can boast in ourselves but rather so we can witness to the goodness and power of God at work in our lives and in our world.
• Salt is used to add flavor. We must hear the words of the prophet Isaiah in our first reading and commit ourselves to be authentic members of God’s house. We need to work for greater integrity between our prayer and worship and how we live in solidarity and justice with others. We need our faith to come alive!

We are called to be the light of the world.

• The world needs light for guidance. We must share the Light of the World—Jesus Christ—especially with people and in places that suffer in darkness.
• The world needs light for warmth. We need to welcome and love people as they are and invite them to join us in our journey as we strive to become more and more like Jesus.
• The world needs light for safety and security. We need to make this chapel and St. Rita Parish a place where everyone can feel at home and has an opportunity to share the gifts that God has given them in the Holy Spirit.

We are called as individual disciples and as a community to follow the example of St. Paul. As we begin this next phase of Renew My Church, may we proclaim Jesus Christ with a demonstration of Spirit and power—not our power but God’s power! +

El miércoles pasado, tuvimos una reunión pública para recibir las decisiones del cardenal Cupich para el futuro de nuestra parroquia y las otras en el proceso de Renovar mi iglesia. Hay información más detallada en el boletín de hoy, pero quiero compartir personalmente con usted los puntos principales:

• Nuestra parroquia se unificará o fusionará en la parroquia de Santa Rita de Cascia a partir del 1 de julio.
• ¡Nuestra iglesia no está cerrando! Sin embargo, su estado cambiará. Después del 1 de julio existirá como capilla o misión de Santa Rita. Continuaremos teniendo algunas misas y otras celebraciones y actividades en esta iglesia, y exploraremos formas adicionales de usarla.
• A partir del 1 de julio, el p. Homero Sánchez, OSA, el actual Pastor de Santa Rita, será nuestro Pastor. Vamos a darle todo nuestro apoyo.
• Los frailes capuchinos que viven en el convento Saint Joseph (el antiguo convento de Santa Clara de Montefalco) continuarán apoyando los ministerios pastorales y sacramentales de las parroquias en el área —particularmente Saint Rita, sirviendo al párroco y al liderazgo de la parroquia— así como en otros lugares de la Arquidiócesis.
• Este es el final de un capítulo. Pero es el comienzo de otro.

La forma de nuestra iglesia está cambiando, pero la misión esencial que Jesús nos da en la lectura del Evangelio de hoy sigue siendo la misma:

Estamos llamados a ser la sal de la tierra.

• La sal es un conservante. Debemos continuar transmitiendo a nuestros hijos y nietos las verdades eternas de nuestra fe. Pero tenemos que presentarlos de manera que sean relevantes hoy.
• La sal se usa para purificar. Debemos comprometernos a crecer cada vez más en santidad, no para poder jactarnos de nosotros mismos, sino para ser testigos de la bondad y el poder de Dios en el trabajo en la obra de nuestras vidas y en nuestro mundo.
• La sal se usa para agregar sabor. Debemos escuchar las palabras del profeta Isaías en nuestra primera lectura y comprometernos a ser miembros auténticos de la casa de Dios. Necesitamos trabajar por una mayor integridad entre nuestra oración y adoración y cómo vivimos en solidaridad y justicia con los demás. ¡Necesitamos que nuestra fe cobre vida!

Estamos llamados a ser la luz del mundo.

• El mundo necesita luz para guiarse. Debemos compartir la Luz del mundo, Jesucristo, especialmente con las personas y en los lugares que sufren en la oscuridad.
• El mundo necesita luz para el calor. Necesitamos dar la bienvenida y amar a las personas tal como son e invitarlas a unirse a nosotros en nuestro viaje a medida que nos esforzamos por llegar a ser más y más como Jesús.
• El mundo necesita luz para su seguridad. Necesitamos hacer de esta capilla y de la Parroquia St. Rita un lugar donde todos puedan sentirse como en casa y tengan la oportunidad de compartir los dones que Dios les ha dado en el Espíritu Santo.

Somos llamados como discípulos individuales y como comunidad para seguir el ejemplo de San Pablo. Al comenzar esta próxima fase de Renueva Mi Iglesia, ¡podemos proclamar a Jesucristo con una demostración de Espíritu y poder, no nuestro poder sino el poder de Dios! +
