Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Luke 19:28-40; Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:61-11; Luke 22:14-23:56

Today we begin the most solemn week of the Church year.  Holy Week and the Easter Triduum are filled with special readings, words and rituals.  For example, today is the only day of the year that we have two gospel readings and we are given palms to commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into the Jerusalem.  The Passion Narrative from Luke reminds us that Jesus’ final journey to Jerusalem ended on the cross.  We have many words to consider.

But we also have a problem:  our world is already overwhelmed with words and information.  According to Forbes magazine, every minute of every day:

  • YouTube viewers watch more than 4 million videos.
  • More than 103 million spam e-mails are sent.
  • People send nearly half a million tweets.
  • Nearly 2.7 million gigabytes of data are used by Americans.

Every minute.  Every day.

So perhaps the best gift that I can give you this week is a shorter homily! However, I invite you to pay special attention at our liturgies.  They are filled with powerful words and rituals.  Let them speak to you and to your heart.

  • Pay attention on Holy Thursday when we hear the Last Supper recounted in the Gospel of John.  There will be no mention of bread and wine.  The focus is different:  Jesus washes his disciples’ feet and he tells them to follow his example.  Like those disciples, we are called serve.
  • Pay attention on Good Friday when we are invited to venerate the cross.  As we do this, we give thanks for Jesus’ sacrifice.  We promise to embrace our own crosses and follow in the Lord’s footsteps.
  • Pay attention at the Easter Vigil. Our scripture readings will give us a broad sweep of salvation history.  We will celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—and welcome new members into the Body of Christ.
  • Pay attention to the Good News of Easter Sunday. It will complete the week and begin a season that will end with our celebration of Pentecost and a reminder that the Holy Spirit remains with and in us.

This week is a time to also pay special attention to our hearts.  Let your heart be moved. Welcome the great LOVE that is at the center of our celebrations.  It was LOVE that brought Jesus to Jerusalem.  It was LOVE that inspired him to give us the Eucharist.  It was LOVE that strengthened him to accept the cross.   was LOVE that drew him from the tomb in the resurrection.  May that same LOVE and passion live in us and in our Church.   Every minute. Every day. +
