Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion | Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor
Homily for March 29, 2026 (Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion)
Mt 21:1-11; Is 50:4-7; Ps 22; Phil 2:6-11; Mt 26:16-27:66
Holy Week and the Easter Triduum are the high point of our church year, filled with especially powerful readings and rituals. It’s important to let them speak for themselves, so today’s homily will be a little shorter than normal. I invite you to briefly consider: (1) a surrender; (2) a warning; and (3) a cry (actually, three), and to join me in prayer.
The surrender is offered by Jesus in his agony in the garden at Gethsemane. Facing arrest, trial, torture and execution, Jesus admits to his Father that he wants to avoid them. Yet he surrenders himself to the consequences of his mission: “Thy will be done.” We pray for the faith and humility to discern and follow God’s will, not only in moments of great trial and challenge but also in the ordinary moments of our lives.
The admonition comes after Peter cuts off the ear of Malchus. Jesus warns, “all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” Our world is troubled by wars and other forms of armed conflict. Social media encourages unhealthy and destructive messages. Jesus reminds us that at its heart violence is a toxic and contagious soul-sickness that achieves little more than wider suffering. We pray for the love and courage to work for peace grounded in justice and the dignity of every human life.
Finally, we hear three cries: (1) Jesus’ anguished lament from Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (2) Jesus’ wordless exclamation as he gave up his spirit in death; and (3) the testimony of the guards at his tomb as they witnessed an earthquake and the power of the resurrection: “Truly this was the Son of God.”
We pray for the compassion we need to comfort all who are suffering, for the freedom to hand our spirits over to the care of a loving God, and for all the gifts we need to proclaim to others the life we have in Jesus Christ.
May his passion for us inspire our passion for him and the gospel. jc
Mt 21,1-11; Is 50,4-7; Sal 22; Fil 2,6-11; Mt 26,16-27,66
