Third Sunday of Easter | III Domingo de Pascua
Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Psalm 30; Revelation 5:11-14; John 21:1-19
In Italian, it is known as la Stanza delle Lacrime, “the room of tears”—the small antechamber next to the Sistine Chapel where a newly-elected Pope, the Bishop of Rome, changes from a cardinal’s red into the white soutane (cassock) and zuchetto (skullcap) that have been signs of the papal office for centuries. The room is so named because of the overwhelming emotions that accompany the election to such a consequential office. It is at once a great affirmation and also a great cross. One cannot help feeling honored yet also deeply humbled by being called by the Holy Spirit and one’s brothers to follow in the footsteps of St. Peter as the Vicar of Christ.
It's also notable that several sizes of the attire are prepared before the cardinals gather for their conclave to elect the new Pope. No one knows whom they, after days of prayer, conversation and deliberation, aided by the Holy Spirit, will elect to lead the Church. There is, of course, a lot of speculation about candidates, especially the papabile or favorites. Experience and humility, however, counsel us to heed the ancient maxim: Chi entra papa esce cardinale, “He who enters the conclave as Pope leaves as cardinal.”
I thought of la Stanza delle Lacrime as I reflected on today’s gospel passage, particularly the Lord’s conversation and admonition to Peter on the shores of the Sea of Tiberias. Jesus had appeared to his disciples a third time, confirming his resurrection from the dead. He needed to prepare them for the mission ahead of them. But first he had to deal with some unfinished business.
Peter had succumbed to fear and three times denied knowing Jesus on the night before his death. Now Jesus, ever-forgiving, asked him to reaffirm his love by asking him three times, “Do you love me?” and handing on to him the task of feeding and tending his flock of believers. Then he told him: “When you were young, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go….Follow me.”
Tradition tells us that St. Peter went on to become the Bishop of Rome and, like Jesus, stretched out his hands to be crucified—though upside down because he did not deem himself worthy to die like his Lord. La Stanza delle Lacrime is where the man elected Pope is asked to commit himself to imitate St. Peter in his life and ministry. It is where he reaffirms his commitment to “obey God rather than men.” Indeed, obedience is part of every vocation and commitment to serve God.
As a friar and a priest, I’m vowed to obedience. Part of that means I’m open to go wherever and do whatever my provincial minister discerns is best for our order and the Church. Spouses have a different but no less sacred form of obedience to God and each other. Parents do, too, often subordinating their needs and desires to those of their children. The essence of ministry is service, and that sometimes means being dressed by another and going where we don’t want to go. Through St. Pater’s intercession, may we follow his example and follow the Lord—in love, peace, generosity and faith. jc

Hechos 5:27-32, 40b-41; Salmo 30; Apocalipsis 5:11-14; Juan 21:1-19
